Copy Editing
Copy editing includes many of the elements of proofreading, and more. When copy editing your content, I will ensure that your grammar, spelling, punctuation, stylistic elements, mechanics, and facts are correct and consistent. In addition to fact-checking, assigning heading levels, and fixing misplaced art, I will offer suggestions on how you might improve clarity, tone of voice, transitions, and more.
Proofreading
When proofreading your content, I will correct errors related to spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting. I will check that all of the elements within your manuscript, such as headers, level heads, the table of contents, page numbers, word breaks, end-of-line breaks, page breaks, tables, and references are consistent and accurate. Although proofreading is often confused with copy editing, this process takes place after your content has been edited and the page proofs have been prepared by the designer.
Developmental Editing
While copy editing and proofreading focus on local revision, developmental editing focuses on global revision. Developmental editing involves offering suggestions on how you might expand on your ideas to get your point across, improve organization or word choice, and ensure that your content is as strong as possible for your targeted audience. In addition to providing comments within the manuscript or text, after reading through your content, I will write a “letter to the author,” exploring strengths in your manuscript and some “big picture” suggestions for revision.
